As an increasing number of migrants flee humanitarian crises in Central America, makeshift encampments are growing along Mexico’s border with the United States, where the migrants ultimately hope to gain asylum.

More than 1,000 people, including hundreds of children, are living in a collection of tents at the base of an international bridge in Tijuana, according to Mexico’s national human rights commission.

Over 200 more migrants are camping out in the plaza in Reynosa, across from McAllen, Texas, the commission said.

There has been a sharp increase in the number of Central American children and families fleeing to the United States in recent months, as the region is gripped by a worsening economic and hunger crisis.

The number of families apprehended by U.S. agents while crossing the border nearly tripled in February from a month earlier to about 19,000 people.

U.S. ports of entry remain closed to the vast majority of asylum seekers.

Noisy Cicadas Are Emerging Earlierz

Noisy Cicadas Are Emerging Earlier

States along the East Coast are preparing for a rare and spectacular natural phenomenon. As spring sets in and the soil warms, the ground will erupt as billions of cicadas burst from the earth.

It’s an event nearly two decades in the making. Known as Brood X, this massive swarm has been biding its time underground for the last 17 years.

Brood X is part of a special group of cicadas called “periodical cicadas,” known for their singular life cycles. Depending on the brood, they emerge only once every 13 or 17 years. As the sun warms their wings for the first time, these jewellike insects zero in on a single goal: generating the next brood. They’ll spend a few short weeks swarming nearby trees and finding mates. Then, after laying their eggs in the branches, they’ll die—a swift and brutal conclusion to their exceptional lives. Meanwhile, the eggs will hatch and the nymphs will fall to the ground, burrow into the soil and find nutritious tree roots to feed on. There, they’ll begin their long wait in the dark.

There are only 15 periodical broods in the world, all of them found exclusively in the eastern United States.

Miami’s South Beach confronts disastrous spring break

Miami’s South Beach confronts disastrous spring break (Source Associated Press) Florida’s famed South Beach is desperately seeking a new image. With more than 1,000 arrests and nearly 100 gun seizures already during this year’s spring break season, officials are thinking it may finally be time to cleanse the hip neighborhood of its law-breaking, party-all-night vibe.

The move comes after years of increasingly stringent measures — banning alcohol from beaches, canceling concerts and food festivals — have failed to stop the city from being overrun with out-of-control parties and anything-goes antics. This weekend alone, spring breakers and pandemic-weary tourists drawn by Florida’s loose virus-control rules gathered by the thousands along famed Ocean Drive, at times breaking into street fights, destroying restaurant property and causing several dangerous stampedes. The situation got so out of hand that Miami Beach Police brought in SWAT teams to disperse pepper bullets and called in law enforcement officers from at least four other agencies. Ultimately, the city decided to order an emergency 8 p.m. curfew that will likely extend well into April after the spring break season is over.

Mystery drones hovered over Navy destroyers off California

Mystery drones hovered over Navy destroyers off California, report says (Source nbcnews.com)

Several drones repeatedly swarmed Navy destroyers off the California coast in July 2019, and it remains unclear who was behind the brazen nighttime flights, according to a report on the website The Drive, quoting ship logs. As many as six drones flew around the warships at a time in often low-visibility conditions near Southern California’s Channel Islands over a number of days, with the drones flashing lights and prompting security precautions onboard, according to the report. The report was based mainly on Navy ship logs The Drive obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, as well as publicly available ship tracking data. A documentary filmmaker, Dave Beaty, first uncovered some details about drone flights around the USS Kidd, a Navy destroyer, the report said.

A cargo container ship considered one of the largest in the world has turned sideways and blocked all traffic, according to officials. The situation is threatening to disrupt a global shipping system already strained by the coronavirus pandemic. The MV Ever Given is a Panama-flagged container ship that carries trade between Asia and Europe. The ship became grounded Tuesday.

Evergreen Marine Corp., a major Taiwan-based shipping company that operates the ship, said in a statement provided to The Associated Press that the Ever Given had been overcome by strong winds as it entered the Suez Canal from the Red Sea.

The ship reportedly did not lose any of its containers.

Sowing The Seeds of War. China and Russia’s Lack of Trust. “Washington’s Hegemonic Aspirations Could Result in a Devastating War”

China Is Losing Patience with Washington. “You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry,” China tells Washington, and China is getting angry.

Beijing warns US and its UK, Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand puppets to give up pretending they constitute “world opinion.” See this

This rebuke to the “Five Eyes” follows a strong dressing down delivered by Yang Jiechi, a ruling member of the Chinese government to the Biden regime at the Alaska talks.  Yang Jiechi told the US delegation that “the United States does not have the qualification to say that it wants to speak to China from a position of strength.”  In other words, who do you think you are?  Where did you get the idea that your self-serving position constitutes international public opinion and that you can lean on us to comply with your position? In their most recent public statements President Putin and Foreign Minister Lavrov have stopped pleading with the West to be nice.

Putin acknowledged that Washington only wants a hegemonic relationship with Russia, a relationship inconsistent with Russian sovereignty, and Lavrov said that the EU’s hostility to Russia could result in Russia breaking off relations with Europe.  Washington is probably too arrogant to hear what it is being told.  This is why I am concerned that Washington’s hegemonic aspiration can result in a devastating war.

U.S. spy agencies warned on Wednesday of an ongoing threat that racially motivated violent extremists, such as white supremacists, will carry out mass-casualty attacks on civilians while militia groups target police and government personnel and buildings. Agencies contributing to the assessment by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence included the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and the National Counterterrorism Center. The assessment said extremists who promote white racial superiority have potentially frequent communications with extremists abroad who hold similar ideological beliefs and each seeks to influence the other.

EU plans rollout of travel certificate before summer

EU plans rollout of travel certificate before summer

(Source BBC) A digital certificate to kick-start foreign travel should be given to citizens across the EU “without discrimination”, officials say. The aim is to enable anyone vaccinated against Covid-19, or who has tested negative or recently recovered from the virus to travel within the EU. The 27 member states will decide how to use the new digital certificate. Vaccine passports have faced opposition from some EU member states over concerns they might be discriminatory. Some argue that they would enable a minority to enjoy foreign travel without restrictions while others, such as young people who are not seen as a priority for inoculation, continue to face measures such as quarantine. European Commission officials have made clear they want to avoid discrimination.
